How Therapy Works
1. Assessment & Understanding
In the first session, we focus on what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re currently experiencing, and what’s not working. I’ll ask structured questions to understand your symptoms, history, patterns, and context, and begin forming a clinical formulation to guide our work.
2. Defining Goals & Direction
We clarify what you want to work toward - not just symptom reduction, but also focusing on growth and moving towards your maximum potential. This includes identifying priorities, values, and the obstacles that are keeping you stuck.
3. Active Therapy
Ongoing sessions focus on the work itself. This may involve examining patterns as they show up in real time, working with emotions, challenging unhelpful thinking, and building practical skills to manage stress, anxiety, or avoidance. Sessions are structured but flexible, guided by both a treatment plan and what’s most relevant each session.
4. Review & Consolidation
We regularly review progress and adjust the focus as needed. As therapy progresses, the emphasis shifts toward consolidating gains, strengthening independence, and applying what you’ve learned outside of sessions so change lasts beyond therapy.
